- Facing the increasing demand of products and services friendly for the environment, eco-design methods get to be more and more popular within industrial product development processes. Those design methods have been developed to address the extraction and production phases, then the end-of-life phase even if it is still improvable. The challenge now is to upgrade the models of the use phase that are still roughly considered and do not accurately look like the actual behaviours of customers.

This PhD project aims to propose methods to consider users within the eco-design approaches and consequently within eco-innovation projects. First of all, it is needed to analyse the user-centred approaches for design and highlight the specificities of environmental issues. Modelling proposals are expected, as well as a real implementation. All the necessary methods and tools will be developed. The proposed approach will address the motivations of users and consumers alongside with functional and behavioural aspects on one hand, and on the other hand consider the dynamics of the design process, users’ needs evolution and market developments.

This work is part of the French project Eco-Use. The position includes the work within this project with all the industrial and academic partners. The candidate would have strong knowledge on both engineering product design and development, and environmental assessments. The work is at G-SCOP laboratory at the University of Grenoble, France. This project will start on the 1st of November 2010.
